The Role of Podcasts in Curriculum Design – Sharing our Journey to Inspire Others
Strand 1
Time: 3:40pm to 4:00pm
Presenters: Ceri Halfpenny, Megan Thomas and Freddie Hunt
Abstract:
This interactive session will outline the development, delivery and impact of the Probation Perspectives podcast. This project created by the Community Justice Learning team in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice was created to address a gap in learning materials specifically focusing on probation and the probation officer training (PQiP). This session will be presented by senior teaching fellows and podcast hosts Meg Thomas and Ceri Halfpenny along with CADI Digital Learning Developer and podcast producer Freddie Hunt. It will demonstrate how podcasting can be an accessible and engaging method to teach well!. We will share our motivations for developing the podcast, the tools we have used and tips and tricks we have learned along the way. Since we launched last year the podcast has had over 2500 streams and downloads and gained 206 Spotify followers. We have regularly charted in the top 50 in Apple Podcast genre ‘Social Sciences’. This evidences the impact beyond the classroom. By highlighting some of the challenges we have encountered and lessons learned we will offer practical insights that can be applied to colleagues across the university. Participants will be encouraged to identify how podcasts could be developed in their own area of teaching to inspire and engage their students. The emphasis will be on demystifying the technical aspects and sharing the support available from the CADI team. By the end of the session, attendees will appreciate the benefits of podcasts and understand what they need to get started in creating their own!
