Freedom of speech, freedom of expression and safeguarding

This page brings together guidance on freedom of speech, freedom of expression and safeguarding in academic contexts. It supports staff and students in understanding their rights, responsibilities and sources of support. It aims to encourage an environment where open, lawful and respectful debate can take place while protecting the wellbeing of our University community.

Freedom of Speech: Practical Scenarios

Freedom of speech can raise complex and sometimes challenging situations within higher education. This resource provides a series of practical scenarios to help staff consider how they might respond to different situations involving freedom of speech in teaching, learning and wider university settings.

The scenarios are designed to encourage reflection and support colleagues in developing a balanced and informed approach, while recognising the importance of academic freedom, respectful dialogue and an inclusive learning environment. They offer a useful reference point for staff when considering how to navigate potentially sensitive or challenging situations.
