Abstract:
In a co-design exercise with learners, the only thing which you can reliably expect is the unexpected. Learners are often unsettled by the degree of freedom and autonomy that they are given, as this is not what they expect when they come into class and may initially struggle to engage. Having a tightly structured session helps with this, as it reassures learners that there is a plan and a valid academic rationale behind the co-design exercise. It also helps to maintain momentum and ensure that there is a viable output at the end of the day. This session describes the use of the Double Diamond model and its phases of divergent and convergent thinking to provide a structure for a series of assessment co-design activities with second year degree apprentices, aiming to support the development of key employability skills including negotiation, empathy, active listening and teamwork.
