Abstract:

I want to share my experiences of developing and running an assessment for L5 social work students in which they critiqued the use of AI to complete a decision-making assessment tool related to Child Sexual Exploitation. This assessment was part of the alternative assessment trial and students were given the choice of presenting in groups or on their own. Developing leadership and communication skills is essential for social work practice, but at level 5, presentations can still be a daunting task for some students. This assignment was a synchronous group activity, and students were given a timescale to complete the activity in the classroom. This was popular with students who find group work challenging whilst also developing timekeeping and organisation skills. Both of these activities led to an inclusive approach, whilst maintaining the authenticity of the assessment. AI in social work is a growing phenomenon with an estimated 40% of social workers using it in practice. Our students need to develop these essential skills but also develop a critical understanding, considering the ethics of this addition to their social work toolkit. The assessment also included a reflective aspect in which they discussed how they will use AI in their future practice. I am very new to using AI so also wanted to reflect on my own thoughts and learning about developing this assessment.
