Karen Blackett's Minor Setback, Major Comeback: The Art of Resilience

Project by: Sarah Brook, Senior Communications Officer, Careers and Employability

Background

Sarah and her team contacted CADI, having worked with them on other media projects. They expressed the importance of the event to our students and graduates and invited us to film it.

This project emerged from the opportunity to capture a high-profile event featuring the University Chancellor, Karen Blackett. Having delivered a similar event the previous year without recording it, the team recognised a missed opportunity to extend its reach beyond those who could attend in person.

Karen Blackett had also specifically requested that the session be recorded, recognising the value of the insights shared. Filming the event would ensure that students and graduates who were unable to attend could still benefit from the discussion.

Objectives

The key aim was to make the event as accessible as possible by recording the full session, including the panel Q&A. This approach ensured that:

  • Students and graduates could revisit the discussion in their own time
  • Those unable to attend could still access the content
  • A wide range of insights from the event would be captured and shared, focusing specifically on attendees’ views, reflections, and the key themes emerging from the discussion.

The final event recording will be hosted on the MyCareer platform, allowing flexible, on-demand access for current students, graduates and members of staff.

Outcome

The final video was delivered just over a week after the event, allowing the team to move swiftly in making it available on the MyCareer platformPlease note: the videos are hosted on our MyCareer platform, which requires students/grads to sign in before viewing them.

Although full impact data is still being gathered, there were strong signs of interest. Several students requested access to the recording on the day, highlighting clear demand for the content. Further updates on engagement and reach will be shared as they become available.

What we did

The CADI team worked closely with Sarah and colleagues in advance of the event to plan filming in a complex setup that involved multiple external speakers and a challenging room layout. This included identifying suitable camera positions and ensuring high-quality audio capture.

On the day, the team provided on-site support throughout the event assisting speakers with microphones, adapting to last-minute changes, and ensuring the full session was captured smoothly despite unexpected disruptions.

Experience of working with CADI

“Working with the team was incredibly helpful throughout the project. It wasn’t a straightforward event to film, but the team worked closely with us to find solutions in advance and provided invaluable support on the day.”
