Reasonable Adjustments in Assessments
Project by: Charles Barker, Head of School of Law at the University of Portsmouth
Background
Charles Barker reached out to CADI to collaborate on creating a video resource. He had a clear vision of recording an engaging video that would effectively support the existing communications regarding Reasonable Adjustments.
The project was launched to meet the need for clear, accessible guidance on reasonable adjustments to assessments for academic staff. Specifically, colleagues who needed a practical and engaging video that explains the University's legal obligations under the Equality Act, ensuring a consistent understanding across all academic teams.
Objectives
The aim of this project was to develop a concise video resource that would:
- Support colleagues in understanding why reasonable adjustments are an essential part of assessment practice
- Build confidence in responding to requests for reasonable adjustments
- Encourage proactive thinking to anticipate and plan for inclusive assessment design
Outcome
The Reasonable Adjustments in Assessments: Practical Guidance video resource has now been successfully launched and is prominently featured on the CADI website, where it has already attracted hundreds of views.
Early engagement highlights the video's immediate impact, with colleagues actively accessing it to inform and enhance their practice. By providing a clear, thoughtfully curated introduction to reasonable adjustments, the video supports more inclusive assessment design and encourages meaningful reflection across teaching teams.
Experience working with CADI Digital
“I was guided throughout, and the CADI team was excellent in creating the type of resources I was after.”

What we did
The CADI team worked in close partnership with Charles to produce this engaging media resource, with a clear focus on translating policy into a video resource that shares practical guidance that colleagues can readily apply in their day-to-day work.
Drawing on our in-house expertise and facilities, including the Green Room, we created a polished, accessible video that integrates a range of visual elements, such as images, infographics, and b-roll footage. This approach not only enhanced the clarity of the content but also supported a more dynamic and engaging viewing experience, helping key messages land more effectively with academic staff members.
