As part of our ongoing Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) Services Review Project, which aims to enhance Moodle’s processes, functionality, and user experience, we have partnered with Catalyst IT Europe, a leading provider of Moodle infrastructure and expertise.
With support from Catalyst, we will migrate our Moodle infrastructure to the cloud this summer, in preparation for students starting or returning in September 2025.
Moodle will function for both staff and students just as it does now. The project team is focused on maintaining service continuity and minimising disruption for staff. To this end, modules and courses will be transitioned to the new cloud-based Moodle infrastructure between May and September 2025 as part of the standard end-of-year rollover process. This will ensure a smooth migration for both staff and students.

Catalyst will assist us in delivering a resilient, scalable, and adaptable environment that provides an excellent student experience. This aligns with the strategic direction of the University Strategy and Digital Success Plan for Learning and Teaching.
The Moodle Cloud Migration is a key component of the broader VLE Services Review Project, which has been working to improve user experiences for students and staff. In upcoming communications, we will provide information about a new Moodle Blueprint tool designed to help academics and Learning Designers plan modules and courses based on effective active blended learning principles.
CADI would like to hear from academic teams whose modules start before September 2025 or who have rollovers scheduled outside of the regular May to September window.
To ensure a smooth migration to the cloud, we will be upgrading our current Moodle environment to a slightly newer version during our standard upgrade period, which is scheduled for 6.30am to 8.30am on Wednesday 12 March. This upgrade will take place during consolidation week to minimise disruption. Moodle will function exactly the same way after the upgrade.
