All assessed work is subject to verification or double-blind marking in line with the University’s Assessment regulations

This article covers the process for verification and double-blind marking within Wiseflow, with user guides available to support the process. Wiseflow offers mature

functionality to support the verification of assessments (Reviewer approval) and double-blind marking of major project modules (Marker Agreement).

Recent improvements to mark verification in Wiseflow

Based on feedback from academics in teaching block one, 2024/25 standard assessments, which are subject to marks verification in Wiseflow, are now set up using the ‘Reviewer approval’ process, which is much more closely aligned with existing University practice and our assessment regulations. This configuration makes adjusting marks by someone other than the original marker far easier. In most cases, it is most appropriate for the Module Coordinator to amend marks after the marks verification process has been completed, although this permission is available to all module lecturers in the event the MC is unavailable.

Marks Verification & Mark Finalisation in Wiseflow (Single Marker)

By volume, roughly 85% of the University’s assessments involve a marks verification process.

In Wiseflow, marking and verification is conducted in the following places.

Marking tab (Assessor View button from Moodle)

This is where academics mark the submissions from students. Often, this work is allocated among a team of markers.

Reviewing tab (Reviewer view button from Moodle)

This is where a second member of staff can access all student submissions and associated grades and feedback in order to ascertain that the marks for the module are broadly appropriate and have been fairly arrived at as described within the University’s Assessment regulations

The following user guide will help staff complete the marks verification process and finalise marks ready for release to students.

Marks Verification & Mark Finalisation in Wiseflow (Single Marker)

Often University departments record this verification along with comments or recommendations for grade adjustments on paperwork separate to Wiseflow and make it available to their Module Coordinator for review.

The module coordinator is the most appropriate person in most scenarios to adjust any marks or feedback within Wiseflow resulting from the verification report provided to them.

Module coordinators, as identified on the faculty Master Module Spreadsheet are given an extra permission automatically within Wiseflow - ‘Decides on the final grade for the participants and submits the result’. This permission is extended to all other identified markers on the module so grades can be finalised more easily, in the event the Module Coordinator is unavailable.

Important:

All lectures and support staff with access to an assessment can unlock, amend and refinalise marks. If a rubric has been used for marking, the original marker must unlock and adjust the specific rubric marking. Other markers cannot currently adjust colleagues' rubric marking, only the top-level grade. Ensuring the grade and rubric marking are consistent is recommended good practice to provide clarity to students.

Double-blind marking of Major Project Modules

Wiseflow has a mature workflow for double-blind marking which allows two markers to mark the work without having sight of the mark awarded by the other marker. This functionality is not available within any other University assessment platform.

This functionality has been thoroughly piloted with teams in Engineering and is ready for wider support within the University to support double-blind marking of major project modules.

The following user guide will help staff understand how to double-blind mark within Wiseflow:
