Richard Crabtree
Learning Designer
Richard joined the University of Portsmouth in 2017, bringing with him over a decade of teaching and lecturing experience in computing, business, and ICT across the UK and internationally. He began work at the University as a Senior Online Course Developer before becoming its first Learning Designer in 2021.
With a BSc in Computer Animation and a PGCE with QTS, Richard combines a strong foundation in subject knowledge and pedagogy. His MSc in Video Game Technology brings a creative, interactive perspective to learning design, while his MBA in Strategic Leadership supports his ability to align academic goals with institutional strategy. This diverse academic background allows Richard to bridge the gap between technical innovation, effective teaching practice, and strategic thinking.
Working closely with academic colleagues, students, and external stakeholders, Richard supports the design and development of learning at every level—from overall course structure to session activities and assessments. He is particularly interested in active blended learning, not only as a method to improve engagement but also as a pathway to more meaningful, outcome-driven educational experiences. His design approach is grounded in the principles of constructive alignment, ensuring coherence between learning outcomes, activities, and assessment.
